Starting out in Modelling – Guide to Modelling

A roadmap for breaking into modelling

getting modelling workResearch modelling, and the different types of modelling

Start by researching. Read about the types of modelling that are appropriate to you (you can find articles about most types of modelling on our website) and decide what you think you’d be most suited to. Try to be realistic in assessing your look. If you’d like a consultation with one of our experts, register on our online form and someone will be in touch.

Have a test photoshoot

Being beautiful can be a very different thing to being photogenic, so a good way to find out if you’re going to be suitable for modelling is to have a test photo shoot. If you’d like to have a professional model photoshoot with industry experienced make-up artists, stylists and photographers then complete our registration form, and make sure you upload a recent photo.

Modelling assessment

Following the shoot you will have a chance to review your photographs with an expert, who will be able to offer more solid advice on how to progress in seeking modelling work, including recommending appropriate modelling agencies, and in some cases, even making introductions to modelling agencies.

Having put you through ‘a day in the life of a model’, we will be in a better position to assess your strengths and weaknesses as a model and help you make the right decision about modelling.

Preparing your modelling portfolio

Naturally, your modelling test photo-shoot will provide you with a great starting point for your modelling portfolio, and you’ll be able to select any images you wish to order. These images can be sent to modelling agencies to show you at your best and give you the best chance of being selected for modelling work.

You’ll also be able to use them for freelance modelling work, and to sign up for online modelling directories – cutting out the middle man, and reducing the fees that have to be handed over to modelling agencies.

Modelling competitions

Modelling competitions are a popular way to break into the industry and provide quite a few opportunities for aspiring models. You may need to send in photos (this is where the photos from your model test shoot come in handy!) or you may need to turn up in person.

We list modelling competitions on this website – or register for more insider info and early bird competition notifications.

Modelling castings

Most modelling jobs start with a casting. You need to be prepared to travel to wherever the casting takes place, bringing one or two changes of outfit, and your Z card with some of your professional modelling images and your personal statistics, such as height, weight, eye and hair colour and dress size.

Don’t be surprised if you have to spend a lot of time waiting around, and if competition is tough. Stay positive, keep smiling and you’ll increase your chances of getting picked for paid modelling work.

Register if you want to be kept informed of open modelling castings.

Modelling work, modelling jobs, and modelling placements

If you’re lucky enough to get chosen from a casting or even win a competition, then there are many types of modelling work available, from catwalk to catalogue to fashion. Our website contains lots of information about the different kinds of modelling work and modelling jobs, and  if you register, you could have a free consultation and learn even more.
