Getting modelling work

Models have to work hard to win jobs, as there are lots of other models out there, hoping to win the same assignment. If you want to make a living as a model, you'll need to make sure you make the most of every opportunity from casting to callback to job.

modeling agency workMost modelling jobs start with a casting. This is where the client invites a range of models along in order to see them in person. Castings can help weed out models who have not been honest about their statistics (some try lying about their height and then turning up in platforms, but it doesn’t work! At castings models are usually asked to remove their footwear), models who turn up late or not at all, and those who simply have a bad attitude.

For those that make it past the first hurdle, the clients may take some test pictures and interview the models, seeing how they come across and whether they have the right look and character.

At the end of the casting they will collect up the comp cards of each model, for reference as they make their choices.

Call backs

After castings, a shortlist of models may be called-back in order for a final decision to be made.

Modelling jobs

Once you’ve got your foot in the door, a great way to get more modelling work is to make sure you’re the best model the client has ever seen. Find out as much in advance as you can, to be as prepared as possible. If you can, find out about the client, what sort of style and look they like. Follow instructions carefully, bring what you’re asked to and check whether you need to be ready made up or not.

On the day turn up early, and be polite and friendly. Follow instructions promptly and don’t start making divaish demands.

If the client likes you as well as your pictures, you’re much more likely to be asked back again for future jobs.
