Fashion Fit Modelling

fashion fit modellingWhat is a fashion fit model?

Fashion fit models are models who work behind the scenes as clothing is being designed.

They have the perfect proportions for a given clothing size, so designers and manufacturers can test their creations and see where things are tight or loose, and how the fabric hangs. Therefore, the important thing for fit models is to stay exactly the same size and never gain or lose an inch, anywhere – otherwise their job will be at risk.

There are roughly five categories of female fit models: junior, missy, contemporary, plus and petite, and garments are measured at many different points, including chest, waist, high hip, low hip, thigh and bicep. Other important measurements are shoulder slope, shoulder to bust and bust to hip.

Why use a fashion fit model?

While mannequins and computer modelling is very advanced now, and can give a lot of information about how fabric will look, and in some cases even how it will move, there is a limit to what these methods can tell a designer.

Experienced fit models offer more of a technical talent service than a simple photographic model, as they are able to spot problems with garments and point them out for correction. For example: how snug the item should be, a viable sleeve length, how the material will react to the skin, where buttons should be located and style and placement of stitching.

A fit model checking a new garment will test it to reasonable limits – can they hug someone, reach a supermarket shelf and squat down without the fabric becoming restrictive, showing an unwanted flash of flesh, or – horror of horrors – actually tearing?

Fitting models can save clients valuable time and money when it comes to castings, fittings and production costs – as they can be sure they have the garment right in advance and avoid nasty, costly surprises. Imagine if a pair of jeans went into production, with hundreds of thousands of items produced, only for customers in the store to discover that they pinch around the waist. A fit model can help avoid these expensive mistakes.

Advantages of being a fashion fit model

There are a few major benefits to being a fashion fit model: large manufacturers of fashion designers may hire fit models on a permanent, salaried basis, and because fit models are usually behind the scenes, they are one of the areas of the industry where it’s possible for models to have a long career.
